The Associates are able to provide a small amount of funding to students and senior members for projects or other activities. As we are not registered as a charity, we have few formal limitations. However, we do have some preferences:
- We prefer to give seed corn funding rather than being an ongoing source of funds — we are unlikely to give a medium or long term commitment. We find that good initiatives are eventually incorporated into JCR, MCR or College budgets, or become self financing.
- We tend to like projects that have some sort of entrepreneurial aspect.
- We prefer our funding to assist students in some way, or to assist outreach activities to potential students.
- We prefer to give relatively small grants, of say £300-£500, though we have given up to £1000 or so.
- We prefer projects that contribute something of ongoing value to the College, rather than one-off projects that benefit only current students.
We recognise that some of these preferences may be contradictory, and final decisions may place much or little weight on them.
In recent years we have helped the following, among others:
- the new Geography Society
- the Triple Helix magazine
- the International Society
- the Archaeological Dig
- travel costs for Newnham members of Cadenza participating in an international competition
