- After graduating, I undertook a cell biology research Ph.D. at the Institute of Cancer Research in London. My career since then has moved between research institutes and universities, took me to America and back, and now involves teaching undergraduates, running a cell biology research group, and training and mentoring postgraduates. I take part in the wider cell biology/biochemistry research community by serving on Journal Editorial Boards and reviewing grant applications. I am happy to discuss starting a biomedical science research career, navigating choice points and career stages, and any related topics. There are usually openings for student summer research projects in the lab. Please feel free to email me.

- I've been working at the Natural History Museum in London for the past year and I'm really enjoying it. Many researchers at the Museum travel abroad for fieldwork and I am very lucky to be working on a project which involves frequent trips to Uganda. We are working on malaria and bilharzia (a disease caused by parasitic worms) in mothers and young children in Uganda and are trying to improve control of these diseases. I am very happy to be doing research which is so applied and that I get to use all the skills I learnt as a NatSci at Newnham and during my PhD.

- Though I am now a full time novelist writing within history, I have, through a chequered past, been a radio producer and reporter, a television and radio presenter mostly with the BBC, a journalist and a literary critic for various newspapers. I continue to do some broadcasting but mostly I write and teach creative writing sporadically. While my career path has absolutely no shape to it, that is possibly also to do with the nature of the work. I would be happy to talk about either the media ( though I have no magic formula for getting in I'm afraid) and also writing. I have also juggled freelance work with two children so could also talk about that, should anyone want to hear it! The whole journey has been extremely rich and usually totally unpredictable. So wherever you are now, be prepared to be very surprised as to where the future is going to take you..... and good luck with it.

- A long career in government working on strategies for improving access to justice, much of it part-time, drawing on skills as a writer and critic ( I read English), and experience as a parent and ordinary person! Major highlights have been working with Lord Woolf on Access to Civil Justice (writing a Report that’s still quoted ten years later), implementing the Human Rights Act and devising the policy for a Green Paper on Relationship Breakdown (with a Xmas card delivered by 40 protesting fathers dressed as Father Christmas)legal aid strategy and legal services reform. Now retired and cultivating my gardens in Greenwich and Normandy and looking forward to giving back to the community in various ways, drawing on four decades of working in Whitehall on wicked issues. Current clients are in financial services, aerospace, and technology. Have also worked on luxury goods. I also advise clients on sustainability, corporate responsibility and carbon management issues. When I first left Newnham, I did a postgrad masters at Oxford, then travelled for a year, before starting work in publishing. - I spent most of my career teaching French at Durham University, researching the intellectual history of Europe in the sixteenth and sevententh centuries, and latterly running a large department. This made me an expert in multi-tasking: foreign language teaching; helping young people to think and argue at a highly sophisticated level; publishing books and articles from the client point of view; counselling and management. I am a Fellow of the British Academy and participate in debates on higher education and advise on its representations to government.I pursued and tested innovation, and now look at Cambridge from the outside with quite a critical attitude. I also brought up two daughters as a single parent at a time when this was very unusual for a full-time academic. Now, through my own experience and, vicariously through theirs, I am pretty knowledgeable about that aspect of career management. I value the opportunity to encourage development in the college through the Associates, and am always happy to give information to interested students on career trajectories in higher education.

- I am happy to advise people about a career in the law as I have experience in working as a lawyer in both the public and private sectors - I was a commercial law barrister for ten years and then moved to work in the Government Legal Service. So far I have worked in the Treasury and the Ministry of Defence and I am currently working part time in the House of Commons and also editing a legal text book.

- I've managed never to have worked in a university department, or a business, that has the title of anything in which I'm actually qualified. For the first few years after leaving Newnham I followed a conventional career track in academic science, but then took a sideways move via public understanding of science and science regulation into bioethics, the subject I now teach and research. I've also worked as a freelance translator and editor, and as a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry; I've had experience of living and working in Switzerland and Germany. Happy to talk about any of those topics.

I've spent all my career in accountancy/tax, mostly in professional firms but with 5 years as head of tax at a FTSE 100 company. Happy to talk about careers in finance/balancing career with family; have had one Newnham student workshadow me recently and very happy to talk to others.

- I've had a varied but fulfilling life. Like many women of my generation I left Cambridge and got married young (23) quitting my job in the civil service for one in academe where I could go part-time when the children were born, then having a spell overseas (USA) before returning to ratchet up the job to full time as the children grew up. The big divide came in 1981 when I decided to throw my lot in with the (then) SDP, subsequently Liberal Democrats. From then on I was juggling twin careers in academe and politics, struggling to get some decent publications under my belt while standing for Parliament. After fighting four general elections I was 'elevated' in 1998 to the House of Lords and have been a front bench education spokesperson for the party since 2000. Being a 'working peer' has proved a relatively tough retirement job with often four days a week in the House and quite long hours. It has been useful to have the intellectual capital of my academic career - I specialised in the economics of science and technology - but I have also come to recognise the value in having a chamber where the Government does not have a built-in majority and which (sometimes)seeks to hold the executive to account. Reform is in the offing and it's not clear where that will take us but, hopefully, a chance to spend a bit more time with my family!

- I've worked in education at secondary and now university level. As a nun and theologian I've worked in prison and university chaplaincy & with women & street children in Brazil. I also help train others for Christian ministry & accompany people in their spiritual journey. As a break from all of this I do simultaneous and written translation and interpreting. I'm happy to offer support in these areas or simply as a discreet, objective listening ear while making life choices.

- I'm happy to talk to anyone who wants to discuss the pros and cons of a career in journalism and/or television, how to find out more and where to look for opportunities. My three children are aged from 19 to 27 and so I'm familiar with the issues: how to narrow down your career options, how to build a useful C.V. while at university, where to look for work experience and - crucially - how to get jobs.

I am now a self-employed publishing consultant and researcher. I'm happy to advise on publishing training, the kinds of jobs available in publishing and how to get them, and the pros and cons of choosing a career in publishing, and to share my experience of keeping the balance between family and work.

- I arrived at what I do by a process of elimination, ie what I did not want to do. Happy to advise others who are unsure re careers, but particularly would like to work for a social purpose. I have spent 30+ v happy and fulfilling years in the housing and social care business, but have never wanted to work face to face with clients. Proof that it is possible to use your talents and brain to positive effect, earn a decent salary, and have fun (most important of all!) in a good cause.

- I'm happy to talk about career choices in my areas of interest. I started in research, then moved into the NHS as a clinical psychologist after clinical training. I have nearly 30 years experience of working with people in mental and physical health, about half of that with management responsibilities, while maintaining an active interest in analytical psychology. I would say I am non-traditional in my attitudes and practice, and have learned to bridge across differing worlds.

- After 11 years at Newnham as an undergraduate, graduate student, Research Fellow and then Admissions Tutor I made a completely unplanned and serendipitous career move into the voluntary sector, as Director of education charity the Sutton Trust from 2002-2008, and now as Chief Executive of the Brightside Trust, also an education charity. I'd be delighted to talk to any students interested in the charity/voluntary sector or policy world, or who are wondering about a post-PhD life outside academe.

- I have been a GP for 26 years and have worked in the suburbs, in central London and in a rural dispensing practice. At various stages I have been a locum, a family planning officer, a private GP, an undergraduate tutor, a GP principal and a senior partner. At present I am a GP appraiser, an F2 supervisor and a salaried GP in a deprived inner city practice. I have 3 virtually grown up children embarking on their own careers and a barrister husband. My path from Newnham has shown just how varied and flexible a career in medicine can be, and I hope I will be able to help those that are setting off along the path to plan the way forward both with the details of training, and the broader issues of medical career choices and development.

- My aim as an Associate is to be of use to undergraduates, so I am available if you want a CV proof read or pepped, or just some encouragement as you face life after Newnham. My experience is as an academic strong on teaching, a District Councillor, and I have commercial experience as a Board Member of a thriving innovative charitable company. I have four of 30 and under who are happily employed, but the angst of their finding the right job is fresh in my experience.

- I have practised as a landscape architect in Northern Ireland, since completing a postgraduate professional diploma at Manchester in 1978. I worked in the civil service until '84 and then went into private practice. Having gone up to Newnham to read Modern and Medieval Languages, but without a clue as to what to do as a career, I found my way into landscape architecture through a chance meeting at a dinner party. Part II Geography allowed me to go on and qualify. So you just never know where a dinner party may lead! I have worked in partnership with a woman architect for the last 18 years, and between us we have seven children, so we know a little about juggling family and work. I am happy to assist with careers advice for anyone contemplating landscape architecture but please remember that my experience is very specific to Northern Ireland. As a Cornish exile, I love everything to do with the sea and I escape to go sailing occasionally, though not nearly as often as I would like.
