What we do

The Associates is a group of 60 members of Newnham College whose wide range of skills and experience provides support to students and the College. Our purpose is to further the interests of the College as a place of education, learning and research, and we also assist in development and fundraising.

We meet twice a year at Newnham, encouraging lively debate and strengthening our knowledge of College life and the challenges facing Newnham today. We have regular contact with senior members, especially the Principal and Directors of Studies, enabling us to learn how best to support academic initiatives and the needs of Newnham’s academic community.

We work closely with the Roll Committee and the College—two Associates sit on the Roll Committee, and three contribute as Associate Fellows, attending meetings of the Governing body and forming an important link between the alumnae and the Governing Body.

We provide informed advice on an individual basis on topics of concern to the College, and initiate and support a number of events designed to further the good name and promote the interests of the College in the outside world.

We offer individual practical advice and support to students, and organise careers events and networking lunches jointly with the JCR and MCR.

The Associates have a small fund, available to both JCR and MCR members, to start new initiatives that will contribute to a richer College life and community. Projects have included drama productions, the Graduate Welcome Pack, the JCR Alternative Prospectus and a new and expanded Raleigh Music Society programme.
